Potato Podcast #2: Sailor Moon Crystal Review & Comparisons

Welcome to the second episode of the Potato Podcast! I know, you might be thinking, “Whoa, isn’t it too soon for the second one?!” but, well, Amir and I watched Sailor Moon Crystal recently and we wanted to share our insights with you guys, and this was the most personal way we could do that. So think of this one as a “special episode”!

I was planning this one to be a 10-15 minute podcast, but our conversation branched out to many other discussions, like comparing the original and the reboot, our other childhood cartoons, and maybe a rant or two… haha. In any case, we enjoyed this one, and I hope you guys enjoy it, too!

Is it not appearing? Listen to it HERE.

Did you watch the first episode of Sailor Moon Crystal?
Do you agree with our views? What about the reboot did you like best?

I watched it too and omg, full of nostalgia! I watched it with my boyfriend and he was teasing me because I was smiling all throughout the episode. I love watching this series when I was young and yes, I have memorised their line!

The drawing was better especially Mamuro! He’s more hot and mature in this version. However, I prefer the old version because it’s more bubbly and funny. I noticed that Usagi is skinny too.

I loved episode 1. I was glued to the screen the entire time.
I love all versions of Sailormoon and I am already loving this one.

Like I told Amir, I wish I had your nostalgia :P This is my first time truly watching a Sailor Moon show. I think I need to read the manga fully, though :P

    • FayeFaye says

This needs to be rectified as soon as possible, dear! ;) Come on, you wouldn’t want to be late in the know, do you? :P

I strongly believe that this was one of the first anime shown here. I mean we finally got to be with the cool kids. Anyhow it really brings back memories. I speak of the old one. I haven’t seen the new one, but it seems nicely done. Great chat, ladies :)

Don’t think it was the first anime shown here as I think that deserves to doraemon or something haha, but yes, definitely one of those first things that caught my attention back when I was a wee one.

OMG SAILOR MOON. I was like “Sailor Moon Sailor Moon they’re gonna talk about Sailor it’s gotta be epic omg omg” and hyperventilated when I saw this post haha. xD When you guys talk about superpower girls so many examples come to my mind, but Sailor Moon is absolutely the best. <3 It's like, the first anime I ever watch. Oh Tuxedo Mask where are youuu haha.

Love the podcast, girls! Looking forward for the next episode! :)

Hey now! Wedding Peach was pretty good, too, although you have to admit it was odd seeing girls fight in wedding dresses. The sailor outfits were definitely far more convenient! Haha.

    • FayeFaye says

Yeah, a lot of my friends are hardcore fans of it, too. I’m not surprised, given how it pretty much earned a cult following of its own XD

I need to make sure my sister knows about this. I never did the Sailor Moon thing, but she LOVED it. I saw enough out of the corner of my eye to know who Tuxedo Mask was, but that’s all, so you blew my friggin’ mind, b/c I just assumed that he and Sailor Moon were a thing, and maybe they were, and that other chick was just a home wrecker, I don’t know, LOL. Anyway, glad you ladies had fun with the new version ;)

HAHAHA. Home wrecker =)) You mean Rei? I think that’s the black-haired girls name. Thanks, Jessica! You should watch it next time so we can discuss, all three of us XD

I’m probably the only person who hasn’t watched ANYTHING Sailor Moon before! I know, it’s embarrassing, but all this talk about Sailor Moon Crystal is making me want to watch both the original anime and this reboot. Super thankful that there were a lot of improvements (like the MC not being so annoying, apart from her laugh, lol) in the new series and that both of you seem to like this one more. That’s how good reboots are supposed to be like, in my opinion. I don’t know, but a lot of remakes of films turn out to be worse than the original and it just drives me crazy.

Anyway, awesome podcast, you two! It was fun listening to your discussion. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to give Sailor Moon a go! :D

Yeah, many people say the original is still the best. So far I feel more inclined to agree with them; it’s probably certainly the best when it comes to the plot, as the new one may be more visually-enticing, but it’s far more compact too. It took several episodes for the original to happen before they met Ami, but in here, they had Ami on the second episode! O.O In any case, I still like the reboot because I think I’ll find the original dragging lol.

    • FayeFaye says

HAHAHAHA That’s hilarious! But yeah, I know that there are very extreme otakus in Japan. I even read there have been bending machines where you can buy used girl panties like WTF?!?! :))

    • FayeFaye says

THIS IS NEW. Like 2014 new ;) Get on with the program, Sophie! Don’t find yourself behind the times! Hhaha.

I have to say, so far, so good. I like the animation, and it seems that they’re going to focus on the mythology instead of the romance. Also, the flow is wonderful! I am so freaking happy that Ami is coming on board. When Rai hits the scene, I am going to be so THRILLED!!!

Yes, the animation is really nice, and I heard from a friend that this is going to follow the manga closely, so there won’t be any dragging fillers or anything, which is awesome.
